Becoming a nurse in Australia - what does it cost?

Thinking of nursing in Australia for a year? Here is rough guide of the approximate costs based on my experience of moving to Oz in 2016/17 (prices may now be different)!

(Costs are in English Pounds (£) and Australian Dollars ($))

AHPRA - This is your nursing registration board in which you will need to apply in order to be licensed to work in Australia as a nurse. (See previous blog on AHPRA registration for more). This will cost $740/£407 in total. This must all be paid at the time you apply.

ICHC - Your International Criminal Record Check. This is involved as part of your AHPRA registration. This costs approximately $150/ £82.

WORKING HOLIDAY VISA - The cost upon application is $440/£241. On entry to Australia, you must have at least $5000 dollars/£2,740 in your bank account.

MEDICAL -For nurses you will be required to have a medical before your visa is accepted. This includes a general medical examination, blood tests for HIV, hepatitis etc and a chest X-Ray. This costs approximately £370.

VACCINATIONS - Your place of employment will confirm what proof of vaccinations are required. Prices of vaccinations will be available from most doctors surgeries.

PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY - I worked with the agency Healthcare Australia who covered my professional indemnity for free! Check with your future employer whether this is something you will need to purchase before working.

TRAVEL INSURANCE - A must for every traveler. This price will vary depending on your health requirements and the activities you may participate in. I paid approx £228 for 14 months insurance (also covering a few exciting activities such as sky-diving) from Outbacker Insurance.

FLIGHTS - This will greatly vary depending on what time of the year, where you are traveling from and how early you book! My one way flight cost £500 from London-Sydney.

Did you know if you work for Healthcare Australia and complete a certain number of agency hours you can get a FREE FLIGHT?
