Five things I wish I'd known before applying to work as a nurse in Oz

Working in Australia was the best experience of my life... however there are a few things along the way I wish I had known, which would have made the process a little smoother. Lucky you have me here to do that for you :)

1) Registering with AHPRA takes longer than you think! The application (once all information is gathered; references, verified certificates, statement of services etc) take three months to process. However, it can take considerably longer to gather all of this before you submit!

2) Most applicants will have to have a full medical before entering Oz as part of your visa. This includes a whole body examination, blood tests and a chest X-ray. See my blog about costs.

3) Superannuation, in short, a pension scheme everyone has to opt into if you want to work in Oz. You will have to have a 'super' bank account where they take a cut of your salary. You can claim this back when you return from Oz, but they take a big chunk of it.

4) You can only work with one employer for 6 months! This is a requirement of the Working Holiday Visa. However, luckily for nurses you can work with an agency for the whole year, just not the same hospital.

5) Vaccinations! All nursing jobs require a vaccination check, however Australian requirements are slightly different, so check with your employer before you move!
